About

The Headless Studio is about making records with code. Real VST3 amp sims, hardware drum machine samples, sample instruments, convolution rooms — all of it driven from Python scripts, with the scores, source assets and render settings kept alongside so the work can be revised a year later instead of admired from a distance.

None of it is theoretical. Everything published here was pulled out of a working pipeline that has produced two complete albums — Sign-Off and The Quiet Hours, both playable in full on this site.

The book

The articles are the short version: one idea each, the load-bearing tricks, written for people who already write code for a living.

The Headless Studio — the book — is the long version, and it takes the gentler road. It’s written for an intermediate programmer with no audio background and only surface-level Python, and it explains every idiom and every audio concept the first time it turns up. If the articles move too fast, that’s not you; that’s the format.

It’s complete and free — all 15 chapters and 5 appendices, readable in full here: hosting plugins headlessly, rescuing the incompatible ones, building and mapping your own sample instruments, synthesis from a handful of sine waves, arranging as data, performance timing, mixing, and processed float stems verified against the working mix. The entire pipeline is free and open on GitHub under the MIT license.

No paywall, no catch — take it, use it, make something. If it saves you an afternoon and you feel like it, you can buy me a coffee. Always optional.
