ReaScript vs Bitwig Studio Extension API

ReaScript reaches almost everything

REAPER exposes an enormous API surface covering items, tracks, envelopes, rendering and the UI. If you can do it in REAPER, you can very likely script it. Bitwig’s API is deliberately narrower and more curated — it is designed around controller integration and extensions rather than total automation.

Bitwig’s API is better designed

An observer pattern, clear object model and proper typing make Bitwig scripts more maintainable. ReaScript’s surface is vast, flat, and inconsistent in places — powerful, but you will spend time in the reference.

Iteration speed favours ReaScript

Write a Lua script, run it, see the result. Bitwig’s Java extensions need compiling and reloading, which is a slower loop for exploratory work.

Language choice matters more than it looks

ReaScript’s Python support means you can use the wider Python ecosystem — including mido or music21 — inside your DAW scripts. Bitwig is Java, which is a stronger language for large extensions but a heavier one for a ten-line utility.
